Goodwill to Great

I'm not sure what it was, but from the second I woke up this morning I had the urge to be crafty. I instantly reached for a sweater I hardly ever wear and began brainstorming ideas to make it better. I came up with a few things but decided I either needed to buy some studs (which I should have by now) or hold off. I didn't do anything with it, but when my friend asked me if I wanted to hit up Goodwill in the midst of the rain I jumped at the chance, still wanting to be creative.

At Goodwill, I found this black polyester and spandex (pleather) skirt. I instantly thought it resembled the shape of peplum tops that are currently everywhere. I tried it on, and it was ugly, as a skirt, but I knew it had potential to be a super cute peplum top! I bought the skirt for just $9 and this is what I came up with....

The less than flattering skirt....

Step 1: Try the garment on to get an idea of how much in needs to be altered in different areas (as a top, of course).

Step 2: Lay the skirt flat on the floor and turn it inside out, placing a few pins where you intend to take it in. The skirt I bought has a zipper on one side, that I definitely wanted to stay away from. So, I just took all of the material in one the opposite side. The skirt was fairly straight and I wanted the top to be form fitting so I took it in about 1 inch where the bust would be and about 4 inches at the waist. Once, I reached the pleather part that flares out, be sure to not sew straight down, but to angle it back out the way it originally it was so it will maintain the proper shape.

Step 3: Thread a needle and hand sew the new silhouette line. It is best to use a sewing machine, but I don't have one at school. Even if you do, it is still a good idea to hand sew it first to make sure you achieved the right curve and then machine sew over it.

Yes, it is much more curvy on the side I took in, but it looks good on.
Step 4: Try on the top and make sure it fits perfectly, make any adjustments as needed. It should be fairly easy to remove the stitches if need be. If the fit is just the way you like it, cut off the extra fabric. Stay at least a centimeter away from the stitch, to be sure not to cut it.

Here is the finished product!

I love a bold contrast!

Anytime I put on lipstick I have the urge to take webcam selfies,
so here's one to add to the collection of weird photos of myself
that I put on the internet.
Hope you all enjoyed this!

Love,
